Mychal Givens Earns Fourth Save
3 years agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Mychal Givens threw a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins on Friday. He struck out two and allowed one hit, a double to Lewis Brinson. Earlier in the game, it didn't appear that the Reds would need to turn to their closer as starter Sonny Gray departed after the seventh inning with a 5-0 lead, but Lucas Sims promptly gave up a three-run homer to Jazz Chisholm in the eighth inning, lining up a save chance for Givens. The veteran reliever now has a 3-2 record, 2.08 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, four saves, and 44 strikeouts over 39 innings of work. He seems to have taken over as the primary closer in Cincinnati going forward.
