3 years agoNew York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes lasted five innings for a second consecutive start Thursday against the Mariners. Cortes surrendered a pair of runs on five hits, walking three while striking out just two batters. He did not factor into the decision. Cortes didn't have the best control of his pitches and didn't coax many swings and misses out of the Seattle lineup but still found a way to keep them off balance. Mariners hitters managed just an 85.3 MPH average exit velocity against Cortes, as he continues to be adept at inducing weak contact. Cortes has been solid as a spot starter for New York, recording a 2.15 ERA and 41:13 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 37 2/3 innings despite not winning a game yet. With the Yankees currently thin on rotation depth, Cortes should be expected to make at least another start or two. He can be counted on in deeper leagues as a streamer, especially if he takes the mound against the Royals, the Yankees' next scheduled opponent following the Mariners.--Tim Capurso
