3 years agoNew York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes looked sharp in his outing against the Rays on Wednesday. Despite not factoring into the decision, Cortes pitched five innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits while issuing zero walks. The lefty struck out five, showing some solid control of the zone with a 28 percent CSW while inducing a fair amount of weak contact from the Rays' batters, who managed just an 85.2 MPH average exit velocity against him. Cortes has thrived for New York as a hybrid starter-reliever, pitching to a 1.93 ERA and 0.95 WHIP while recording a 39:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 32 2/3 innings. He figures to remain in the rotation until Luis Severino (shoulder, groin) returns from the injured list, giving him some streaming appeal depending on the matchup.--Tim Capurso
