Nick Martinez's Deal Becomes Official
3 years agoThe San Diego Padres' four-year deal with starting pitcher Nick Martinez became official on Wednesday, and the deal is for $25.5 million, according to a source. Martinez will receive a $2 million signing bonus and make $4 million in 2022. In each of 2023, 2024 and 2025 he'll have a $6.5 million player option and a $1.5 million buyout. The 31-year-old right-hander had a nice four-year run overseas in Japan and initially agreed on a deal with the Padres on the night before the lockout on Dec. 1. Before his four-year stay in Japan, Martinez posted a 4.77 ERA and 1.45 WHIP while striking out 237 and walking 148 in 415 1/3 innings over 88 appearances (68 starts) in a four-year span with the Texas Rangers. He'll represent rotation depth for the Friars to begin the 2022 season.
