Nick Mullens Named Primary Backup
5 years agoUpdating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens will be the team’s primary backup, per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. Both Mullens and CJ Beathard made the 53-man roster on Sunday but the Niners rightfully anointed Mullens their No. 2 behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Mullens, an undrafted rookie in 2018, made eight starts last season posting a 90.8 QB rating with 2,277 yards (284.6 YPG), 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He showed significantly more poise than Beathard, who’s been a turnover machine in his 13 career games. As a backup, Mullens has zero fantasy relevance but with Garoppolo returning from a torn ACL, nothing is guaranteed.
