Nick Pivetta Destined For No. 2 Starter Role
3 years agoBoston Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta is expected to occupy the No. 2 role in the rotation coming out of Spring Training, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. With Eduardo Rodriguez in Detroit and Chris Sale (rib) sidelined, Pivetta will see his usage increase this season. He should pitch on April 9th against the Yankees after Nathan Eovaldi gets Opening Day. From there on, offseason additions Michael Wacha and Rich Hill will find themselves in the mix. In 2021, Pivetta went 9-8 with a 4.53 ERA, 26.5 percent strikeout rate, and 9.8 percent walk rate through 31 games (30 starts). The 29-year-old remained strong down the stretch, allowing just four runs over 13.2 innings in the postseason. He found himself used as both a starter and long reliever in October.
