Panthers Haven't Discussed Extension With Baker Mayfield
2 years agoCarolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said on Tuesday that the team hasn't had any talks with quarterback Baker Mayfield and his representation about a contract extension. "Our whole focus was bringing Baker in to compete with Sam Darnold," Fitterer said. "We'll take it up to training camp. That's as far as we're going to take it and we'll let it play out throughout the season." If Mayfield proves he's healthy after having surgery on his left shoulder, wins the starting job over Darnold and plays well in 2022, the Panthers could then decide to talk an extension with the former No. 1 overall pick. The 27-year-old will be in an open competition with Darnold in training camp, but unless he falls flat, the expectation is that Mayfield will be Carolina's Week 1 starter under center.
