4 years agoWashington Nationals starting pitcher Patrick Corbin is trying to throw more changeups and cutters to keep hitters guessing more in 2021. Corbin made his spring debut on Saturday, throwing two innings while surrendering two hits, one run, and striking out three. The 31-year-old has relied heavily on his fastball-slider combo, combining to throw the two pitches over 90 percent of the time in 2020- while throwing the change just 5.6 percent of the time. It can be an effective pitch for Corbin, given he posted a whiff rate of 28.9 percent with it as recently as 2019. It's something manager Davey Martinez wants to see Corbin utilize more often, particularly against right-handed batters. A more diversified approach would help Corbin get back to being the pitcher that hurled over 200 innings while striking out over 10 batters per nine innings in 2018 and 2019.--Tim Capurso
