Patriots Release Cam Newton
3 years agoThe New England Patriots have released quarterback Cam Newton as they trim their roster to 53 ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Newton struggled in training camp as he had to miss time on the COVID-19 list, which opened up an opportunity for quarterback Mac Jones to take the job and run with it. It is not a surprise that Jones won the starting job, but the former NFL MVP being released was not foreseen by many. It was expected that if Newton lost his job, he would end up being the backup to the rookie. The 32-year-old now hits free agency and could be an interesting option for any teams that are in need of a quarterback. He would likely be the backup if he were to be signed because learning a new offense after training camp is not an ideal situation for a quarterback. As of now, it would be best to look elsewhere for a fantasy quarterback. Still, if Newton eventually starts for a team this season he could be a lower-end QB2 because of his rushing ability.
