5 years agoNew York Mets first baseman Peter Alonso agreed to a one-year contract for $652,521 with the Mets on Wednesday. The contract, which is the highest salary in baseball history for a player coming off his rookie season, amounts to a goodwill gesture from the Mets, who could have simply renewed Alonso's contract for the MLB minimum. Alonso broke out in 2019, with a line of .260-53-120-103-1. Alonso is not eligible for arbitration until 2022 and is scheduled to be a free agent after the 2024 season. For 2020, Alonso projects to be one of the top power hitters in all of baseball. While he may see a slight regression in average and home runs, he is essentially a lock to hit at least 40 home runs and drive in over 100 RBI, justifying the Mets decision to keep him happy with the record deal. Alonso should be one of the top first basemen taken in drafts in all formats.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
