Pirates Have Outfield Opening This Year
7 years agoThe Pittsburgh Pirates have an outfield spot open heading into the 2018 season with Andrew McCutchen traded to the Giants. It seems likely that they will choose between Adam Frazier, Sean Rodriguez and Jordan Luplow to fill in next to outfielders Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco. Prospect Austin Meadows, 22, is on the brink of a major league roster spot, but he needs more seasoning at Triple-A. Daniel Nava could be a platoon mate in one of the corner outfield spots against right-handers, but he's unlikely to have a full-time role. Frazier graded out well defensively in 2017, and the Pirates like his bat, as he was manager Clint Hurdle's most frequent leadoff guy last year. S-Rod's numbers suffered in 2017 after shoulder surgery early in the year. Luplow is young and may end up in the minors to begin the year to benefit from playing every day. Luplow probably has the most long-term upside of the trio after hitting .302/.381/.527 with 23 homers at Double-A and Triple-A last year, but Frazier and Rodriguez figure to see more work, at least to begin the year. Without any guaranteed at-bats, this is a situation to avoid, but if you're targeting one of them in an NL-only league, Frazier is probably your best bet.
