5 years agoThe Pittsburgh Pirates had four selections in the first 72 draft picks in the 2019 MLB amateur draft. After selecting high school right-hander Quinn Priester at No. 18, they used their competitive-balance pick (37th overall) on William Penn Charter School (Philadelphia, PA) center fielder Sammy Siani. The left-handed hitter batted .457 this past high school season with eight doubles, nine triples, six home runs, 25 RBI and 16 stolen bases. A Duke University commit, the 6-foot, 175-pounder was "without question one of the best players in all of the country in the 2019 class," according to Blue Devils coach Chris Pollard. "He has a tremendous hit tool from the left side and he’s a very good runner. A true center fielder, Sam goes and gets the ball from gap to gap." The Pirates took a pair of college players with the next two picks, nabbing Indiana's center fielder Matt Gorski (No. 57) and Houston's third baseman Jared Triolo (No. 72).--Daniel Benjamin
