7 years agoWith most of the Toronto Blue Jays lineup producing at the plate, outfielder Randal Grichuk has essentially been relegated to an afterthought sitting on the disabled list. Grichuk sprained his PCL in late April, but looks to be progressing nicely. He’s advanced to hitting off a tee, and the next steps will be facing live pitching, likely to be followed by a minor league rehab assignment. This is all well and good for Grichuk, but he has bigger problems on his hands than just injury: production. Across 77 plate appearances this season, he’s slashing a putrid .106/.208/.227 (.435 OPS) with two home runs. He was basically replaced by Teoscar Hernandez in the lineup prior to injury, and Hernandez, Kevin Pillar, and Curtis Granderson are all producing in the outfield. Grichuk is much better than what he showed prior to going down, but it may be tough for him to carve out an everyday role anytime soon.--John Smith
