Rangers to Give Jurickson Profar Consistent Playing Time in the Infield in 2018
7 years agoWhile at-bats may be tough to come by, the Texas Rangers are looking to get utilityman Jurickson Profar more opportunities in the infield during the 2018 season. After not being traded last season, the Rangers are hoping that keeping the 25-year-old Profar in the infield, where he is more comfortable, will unlock the offensive potential he has been teasing since he was named the top prospect in baseball in 2012. After not receiving an offer they believed to be legitimate, general manager Jon Daniels spoke with Profar, and he expects to spell starters at third base, second base and shortstop throughout the season. While 75 games seems optimistic due to Rougned Odor's and Elvis Andrus' durability and Adrian Beltre's unwillingness to sit even when injured, Odor's struggles at the plate last season and newcomer Willie Calhoun's lack of defensive ability may offer an opportunity for more playing time if Profar opens the season hot. It may seem like Profar has been around forever, but he's still just 25 and has plenty of promise. Dreams of superstardom may be over, but if he performs, the infielder could still carve out a fantasy-relevant role in the big leagues. Do not draft him in shallow leagues, but keep him on your watch list and jump at the first sign of value.
