7 years agoSan Diego Padres manager Andy Green hinted the loser of the second base battle between Carlos Asuaje and Cory Spangenberg may not make the final roster. Due to crowded outfield and pitching situations, the Padres likely do not have room for two left-handed hitting second basemen. Additionally, right-handed Jose Pirela, who can play outfield and second, has a secure roster spot. Asuaje and Spangenberg profile similarly, with Spangenberg demonstrating better pop and speed while Asuaje has superior plate discipline and defense. For the spring, Asuaje has a .333 average with seven RBI while Spangenberg is hitting .235 with a homer. Of course, this could all be moot if prospect Luis Urias (or even Fernando Tatis Jr.) gets called up sooner than later.--Andrew Le - RotoBaller
