4 years agoNew York Mets reliever Seth Lugo (elbow) is reportedly responding well to treatment following bone spur surgery he had just prior to spring training. Although Lugo has not started throwing yet, Mets manager Luis Rojas has indicated that Lugo should begin throwing soon. It appears that Lugo remains on pace to return to the Mets sometime in mid-to-late May. Heading into 2021, Lugo was projected to primarily work out of the bullpen where he has become one of the elite set-up men in baseball. In 2020, as both a starting pitcher and reliever, Lugo posted a somewhat mediocre 5.15 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts in 36 2/3 IP. However, Lugo's ERA as a reliever over 10 1/3 IP in 2020 was 2.61 and he posted a 0.97 WHIP. Once he returns from the injured list, Lugo should work in unison with Trevor May to handle late-inning work as a bridge to get to closer Edwin Diaz. Assuming Lugo suffers no setbacks, he should be in line to put up elite ratios and strikeouts, to go with a large number of holds, and perhaps some saves if Diaz struggles. Managers with deep benches or IL space to roster Lugo in leagues that reward holds should do so.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
