7 years agoLos Angeles Angels starting pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (elbow) plans to finish the season as the DH and hasn't decided yet whether he'll undergo Tommy John surgery. Even if he does have the surgery, which would keep him from throwing until 2020, Ohtani could return as the DH next year. Despite having damage to his ligament in his right elbow, Ohtani has four homers in his last three games and 19 on the season. "Swinging doesn't affect my elbow in any way," Ohtani said. "I feel like I'm progressing as a hitter right now. I'm getting as many experiences as I can while the games count." On the year, he's batting .287 with 19 dingers and 50 RBI, and he's 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 10 starts as a pitcher. He's more attractive to fantasy owners as a pitcher, but he obviously still carries value in all leagues as a hitter, too. It remains likely that Ohtani will undergo the surgery that will keep him off the mound all of next season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
