Spencer Torkelson Signs Contract, Joins Roster

4 years agoDetroit Tigers third baseman Spencer Torkelson has officially signed his contract with the Detroit Tigers. It is reportedly worth $8,416,300, which is a new MLB draft bonus record. In addition, Torkelson is the first No. 1 overall pick to top his slot value. He has been added to the 60-man roster for the upcoming MLB season, although he was likely just added for developmental reasons. With perhaps the most MLB-ready bat in recent memory, Torkelson figures to be in play for the Tigers at the major league level in short order, but it's a stretch to think he'll see big league bats in 2020. Detroit drafted him as a third baseman, but he can also play first base.--Jakob Ashlin
