5 years agoPittsburgh Pirates left-hander Steven Brault had his best outing as a starter in Wednesday's 7-2 victory over the Reds, scattering three hits and two walks while tying a season high with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. The key for the 27-year-old was throwing strikes, as he averaged 13.3 pitches an inning, and keeping the ball on the ground -- the Reds hit only three fly balls. Brault had given up a combined three home runs in his other two starts this season. With the outing, Brault improves to 2-1 on the season and lowers his ERA to 5.87. It is unknown when his next outing will be and whether it will be as a starter or reliever, although it appears likely that Brault will remain in the rotation, as several Pirates pitchers are still dealing with injuries.--Daniel Benjamin
