Taylor Heinicke, Kyle Allen To Compete For Backup Role
3 years agoWashington Football Team quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen (ankle) will battle it out in the preseason for the backup role behind the team's unquestioned starter Ryan Fitzpatrick. Allen is dealing with the ankle injury he sustained during a training camp practice, so it could be an uphill battle for him to secure the backup role ahead of Heinicke. Heinicke signed a contract extension this offseason after his impressive performance in the playoffs against the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, meaning the team envisions a role for him. The preseason will be a crucial part in the determination of who wins the job, so whenever the two are on the field, they must make the most of it. Fitzpatrick will play in the preseason opener, but it is safe to say he won't see much action after that. Heinicke and Allen should be given plenty of opportunities to show what they can do. Heinicke is probably the favorite for the backup role, and he would have some QB2 intrigue in deeper two-QB leagues if Fitzpatrick missed time with an injury.
