Tevin Coleman's Competition Thinned Out By Injuries
5 years agoWith the latest setback to San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon (knee), Tevin Coleman should benefit in a backfield with fewer mouths to feed. Reunited with head coach Kyle Shanahan, Coleman enters 2019 as the Niners’ nominal lead back but should operate in a regular committee. However, once projected to share touches with both McKinnon and Matt Breida, Coleman should absorb the majority of McKinnon’s vacated snaps. The fifth-year runner gained 800 yards on 167 carries in 2018 and grabbed 32 passes for 276 yards, scoring nine times total. Likely penciled in for 15-plus touches, Coleman should start the year as a borderline RB2/3. However, if he struggles, the team probably won’t hesitate to pivot to Breida or upstart youngster Raheem Mostert.
