Texans Cut Royce Freeman
2 years agoThe Houston Texans cut running back Royce Freeman on Wednesday. It was veteran Marlon Mack, not Freeman, that was surprisingly cut on Tuesday, but the Texans re-signed Mack to the practice squad on Wednesday and released Freeman a day later. As things stand right now, rookie Dameon Pierce is set to lead Houston's backfield on early downs to open the season, with veteran Rex Burkhead likely to do most of his work on passing downs. Dare Ogunbowale will operate as the No. 3, with Mack lurking on the practice squad. Freeman, a third-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2018, hasn't been nearly as good as he was after two solid seasons to open his career in 2018 and 2019. Last year, he finished with 56 carries for 169 yards and no touchdowns, adding 10 receptions for 77 yards in 15 games (no starts) for the Carolina Panthers and Texans.
