4 years agoToronto Blue Jays pitchers Trent Thornton (elbow) and Tim Mayza (elbow) were informed that they will be with the club on opening day. Both players are returning from surgeries and were on the outside looking in when camp began. Thornton had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow last fall while Mayza underwent Tommy John surgery in the fall of 2019 and missed all of last season. He'll likely be mostly a one-inning pitcher for the Jays and could eventually see high-leverage innings as the club will not name a closer in the wake of Kirby Yates' surgery. Thornton threw more innings than any Jays starter in 2019 but appeared in just three games last year. He will serve as the long man out of the bullpen, according to manager Charlie Montoyo.--Marc Hulet - RotoBaller
