4 years agoNew York Mets reliever Trevor May managed to only retire one batter when called upon to protect a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning in the Mets' 5-3 loss to the Phillies on Monday. May was pitching in his first game as a Met after signing with the team in the off-season. Unfortunately, May barely resembled the lock-down middle reliever he was in Minnesota from 2018 to 2020. After retiring the first batter he faced, May promptly loaded the bases by allowing two hits and a walk. All three runners eventually scored later in the inning. May had a solid spring in Grapefruit League action and, as mentioned, is coming off a great 2020 campaign as well as three straight seasons where he posted a WHIP of 1.16 and xBA of .210 or less. Despite the poor debut, May remains the primary set-up man to Edwin Diaz for the early part of the 2021 campaign, with Seth Lugo (elbow) starting the season on the injured list. As a result, May should be on the radars of all managers in leagues that reward holds. He can provide managers with outstanding ratios, and strikeouts, notwithstanding Monday's performance.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
