2 years agoNBC Sports' Peter King is forecasting San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell to be the stalwart of the backfield to open the season, with Trey Sermon serving as an active No. 2. King thinks both Mitchell and Sermon will see plenty of opportunities, and if Mitchell gets hot early and stays healthy, he can be a 1,000-yard back in the Niners offense. The 49ers want to bring quarterback Trey Lance along slowly in his first full season as the starter, so San Francisco could be a run-heavy offense early on. Sermon has reportedly been on the roster bubble this summer, but he's also been praised by general manager John Lynch. The second-year back will likely be on the roster, but it remains to be seen if he's ahead of Jeff Wilson Jr. for No. 2 duties behind Mitchell to open the regular season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
