6 years agoToronto Blue Jays reliever Tyler Clippard didn’t start the ninth inning on Tuesday against the New York Mets, but he was the one that finished it. With an 8-6 lead, John Axford got the initial call in the final frame for Toronto, but after allowing a two-out single to outfielder Jose Bautista followed by a walk to second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera, he got the hook. In came Clippard, who induced a game-ending ground out from outfielder Michael Conforto on three pitches. We wouldn’t read too much into who started the ninth inning in this one, as the closer role figures to be somewhat of a committee approach with Clippard slightly in the lead for now. Once Ryan Tepera comes back from injury, he could take over the position again immediately.--John Smith
