Victor Martinez Will Likely Retire After 2018 Season
7 years agoDetroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez has indicated on more than one occasion that this is likely to be his last season in the big leagues. The veteran slugger has endured two knee surgeries and spent time on the disabled list last season with an irregular heart beat. It's understandable, then, that Martinez's production at the plate last year suffered. Now at age 39, he's hoping to bounce back and end on a high note. All signs from spring training suggest that Martinez is feeling good, so there's a chance we could see something more like his 2016 campaign (.289 average, 27 home runs) than his 2017 effort (.255 average, 10 HRs). The switch-hitting Martinez ranks sixth all time in batting average, 20th in HRs and 17th in RBI among switch hitters.
