Yankees Sign Robinson Chirinos
4 years agoFree-agent catcher Robinson Chirinos signed a minor-league contract with the New York Yankees on Monday, adding some uncertainty to the team's catching situation. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole pitched well with Chirinos behind the plate when the two were teammates in 2019 with the Astros, and there's some speculation that Cole and Chirinos might be paired again in 2021. Cole pitched well no matter who his catcher was in 2019, though, and Chirinos doesn't seem likely to overtake Kyle Higashioka as the team's primary backup catcher (if the Yankees decide to go this route) or as Cole's personal catcher. Fantasy managers should expect Chirinos to be little more than a depth piece in 2021 as a result, and if starting catcher Gary Sanchez continues to struggle or if Cole requests a personal catcher, then Higashioka is likely to take the reins before Chirinos does.
