People were still rattling off comical tweets and hilarious gifs of kickers failing after Saints' kicker Zach Hocker hit the left upright on a 30 yard field goal attempt in the waning moments of the fourth quarter game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. The referee may also have still been explaining the rules to the teams when C.J. Spiller started to run a wheel route down the right side, caught a beautiful ball from Drew Brees, and never looked back on his way to a game winning touchdown on the second play of overtime.
Drew Brees said how his shoulder felt fine, joking that it was "good enough". The game ending touchdown was Drew Brees' 400th touchdown pass. With the Carolina Panthers defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons beating down the Houston Texans earlier, seeing each of them improve to 4-0 on the year, the Saints couldn't risk falling any further behind if they want to compete this year in the NFC South. They're still in the cellar, but it is early, with plenty of divisional games to come.
It is encouraging to see Brees complete a game and show that his arm can hold up. One does have to question the defense though, as the Cowboys were already hurting before they lost Lance Dunbar at the opening of the second half, and the Saints defense still struggled to contain Dallas. The truth is, Dallas' offensive line is going to ruin most defensive coordinator's days, but getting beat regularly by a depleted wide receiver corps with Brandon Weeden slinging the pigskin is hard to excuse. Next week the Saints travel to Philadelphia to take on the struggling Eagles as they look to build on the momentum of their first victory in 2015.
