Agenda

  1. It's Always Something
  2. Today's Weather and Updates
  3. Tomorrow's Picks

1. It's Always Something

You may have noticed that today's column has been published on them world wide internets later than usual - my apologies. You can thank some random Windows update for that, as it acted as the proverbial dog and ate my homework. Just the cherry on top of a challenging 24 hours that left me more or less in this state.

2. Today's Weather and Updates

All clear for today's games. Tomorrow's limited slate might become even smaller if thunderstorms roll through D.C. and threaten the Nationals-Marlins contest. That's expected to be a coin flip.

3. Tomorrow's Picks - Monday, August 7

Pitchers to Use

With only seven games on the docket, there are actually more useful streamers than I expected. Jhoulys Chacin has been surprisingly good in recent weeks, although he's generally a nightmare away from Petco and will be pitching in essentially its diametric opposite in Cincinnati.

If you're scared off by that environment (and nobody could blame you if you are), perhaps Ian Kennedy at home against the Cardinals is more up your alley. Kennedy's gopheritis is alive and well, but he's at home and facing a team that ranks in the bottom third in homers.

Other Targets: J.C. Ramirez, Brent Suter

Pitchers to Exploit

Chris O'Grady, whoever he is, was touched up for six runs in three innings in his last outing. He'll have to face the very same Nationals lineup that put that hurtin' on him. Adding insult to injury is the fact that he'll be opposed by Max Scherzer. Most of the Washington lineup is likely owned in your league, but you could grab Wilmer Difo or Howie Kendrick, probably. Both have been hitting pretty well lately.

Back in the day, I was a huge fan of Matt Moore. While the Phillies are my team by birth, I took a shine to the Rays for their front office work and prospect pipeline. Moore looked like a future stud, especially after dominating in the playoffs just weeks after being called up to the majors. That guy's long gone. The one suiting up for the Giants now is awful, and he'll have to deal with the Cubs at Wrigley.

Other Targets: Trevor Williams, Jordan Zimmermann

Homers on the Wire

Tim Beckham has been outside his mind since being traded to Baltimore. He's collected 13 hits in his first five games with the Orioles, including home runs in three straight games.

Hunter Renfroe has 20 dingers on the year. He hasn't gone deep in almost two weeks, but Monday is a great opportunity to get off that particular schneid. The Reds were supposed to throw Robert Stephenson, who is bad, out there, but he is ticketed for the disabled list with a shoulder issue. Whoever they replace him with is unlikely to be much better.

Other TargetsJosh Bell, Jorge Bonifacio, Eduardo Escobar, Randal Grichuk, Nick Castellanos

Steals on the Wire

Ben Revere is hitting like he did a few years ago (which is to say, a ton of singles) and running likewise. There's really not much else to be found here.

Other Targets: Orlando Arcia, Keon Broxton, Ian Happ

Skill Positions

Hot take: Two-catcher leagues are dumb.
