Agenda
- Slight Tweak
- Today's Weather and Updates
- Tomorrow's Picks
1. Slight Tweak
Now that we're roughly halfway through the season, I'm going to make a slight tweak to how I present the column - especially for pitchers. Rather than write up my favorite picks of the day, I'll focus on new players. You don't me to describe Tommy Pham for the 25th time. Yesterday, you probably did need those few words of background on Ryder Jones. So, in short, more words for new targets.
2. Today's Weather and Updates
Cleveland may be a tad stormy today. Washington is the biggest threat for rain tomorrow.
3. Tomorrow's Picks - Tuesday, June 27th
Pitchers to Use
Six pitchers stand out as streamable tomorrow - a handful of unproven sorts plus Junior Guerra. The latter has a deceptively challenging matchup at Great American Ballpark, nor do I entirely believe in his 3.11 ERA (6.03 FIP!). Walks have been an issue.
Speaking of not believing, Sean Newcomb's 1.96 ERA through three starts is likely to inspire a rush to the wire. Let's not get too hasty. He's a streamer with upside. He induces a healthy whiff rate, but he doesn't yet use his stuff in a way to maximize strikeouts (6.38 K/9). He has a fabulous matchup versus the lowly Padres at Petco Park.
Jeff Hoffman also has a great matchup. He's opposed by the Giants at AT&T Park. Not only is it the most pitcher friendly venue, the Giants offense is the very worst against right-handed pitchers.
For some shakier plays...
Other Targets: Joe Biagini, Mike Clevinger, Matt Strahm
Pitchers to Exploit
Robert Gsellman is suffering from Wade Davis disease this season. He looks superb out of the bullpen. Then he starts, and it's terrible. The Marlins have a bunch of home run hitters. They should like his new penchant for coughing up dingers.
Tyson Ross is preparing for his third start. The slider specialist pitched decently in his return only to completely implode last Wednesday. He allowed seven runs on seven hits and walk in three innings.
Other Targets: Trevor Williams, Kevin Gausman, Hector Santiago, Tim Adleman, Jesse Chavez, Jhoulys Chacin, Matt Cain
Homers on the Wire
Fly ball hitters tend to do well against Alex Cobb. That's Josh Harrison and John Jaso tomorrow. Too bad they're not powerful enough for PNC Park.
Chris Young gets the platoon advantage versus Santiago. Across the aisle, Robbie Grossman is absurdly walktastic against southpaws. Drew Pomeranz doesn't have sharp command either.
Here's a new guy - Franklin Barreto. The Athletics' top prospect has serious strikeout issues, but he may make up for it with hard contact, power, and speed. Personally, I expect him to disappoint impatient owners. He probably needs a couple years to fully latch on in the majors. Jed Lowrie is recovering from a minor knee injury.
Other Targets: Hernan Perez, Scooter Gennett, Josh Reddick, Tommy Pham, Chase Utley, Matt Adams
Steals on the Wire
Mallex Smith isn't making outs. Shockingly, his ownership remains below 33 percent. The Pirates tend to be stolen base prone.
Try Kevin Pillar opposite Caleb Joseph. The O's backstop isn't so hot at gunning down runners.
Every day's a Jarrod Dyson day. So long as you only want a chance at a stolen base. Justin Verlander isn't an easy foe, but Dyson will run if he reaches base. James McCann is easily exploited.
Other Targets: Adam Frazier, Eric Sogard, Jarrod Dyson, Taylor Motter, Jose Pirela
Skill Positions
McCann tends to do good work against left-handed pitching. This year, he's slashing .244/.306/.644 with the platoon advantage. Jett Bandy is out in Milwaukee. He's been replaced by Stephen Vogt. It's unclear how often he'll play in Manny Pina's stead.
