The Cut List (Week 26): Time to Let Go?

Welcome to Week 26 of the Cut List. This week I took a peek at the recent performances of Nomar Mazara, Travis Shaw, Adam Eaton, and Francisco Cervelli.

Now is the time to really nail your free agent acquisitions. Each move has major implications in the final days of the season.

Want some waiver wire advice to make up for those necessary cuts? Make sure you check out our waiver wire blog for the best pickup consultation around.

Time to Move On

Nomar Mazara (OF/DH, TEX)

Cut in 12-team leagues

Why you should cut him: Hitting .179 over the last 15 days, Mazara has endured an unfortunate slump at the end of an otherwise successful season for the 23-year-old. This guy already has three full major league seasons under his belt and he’s taken a step with each year. Target him in 2019 drafts, but fade him the rest of the season.

Better OF/DH options: Alex Gordon, Daniel Palka

Travis Shaw (3B/1B/2B, MIL)

Cut in 12-team leagues

Why you should cut him: The added second base eligibility sure is nice, but Shaw isn’t doing anything with it right now. He’s good for what? One home run per week? Does that cut it in standard league playoff matchups? I think not. Go snag Jeff McNeil or Willy Adames instead.

Better 3B/1B/2B options: Jeff McNeil, Willy Adames

Adam Eaton (OF, WSH)

Cut in 10-team leagues

Why you should cut him. Eaton owners like myself were hoping he’d reach the level he was playing at in April when he was the hottest hitter in the league. He never recaptured the early season spark he lost due to injury. At this point, considering how he’s kept out of the lineup frequently, you’d be better off cutting all ties.

Better OF option: Joey Wendle

Francisco Cervelli (C, PIT)

Cut in 12-team leagues

Why you should cut him: I love Cervelli as much as the next guy, but he hit .179 over the last 15 days and he hasn’t hit a home run in over a month. If you want to win your league, overlooking your catcher will probably prevent you from winning. It’s a position that can really give you a slight edge in a tight matchup. My advice: take advantage of Willians Astudillo and punt Cervelli.

Better C option: Willians Astudillo
