Wade Davis is poised to be one of the top, if not the top, closers in the game in 2016. Greg Holland is no more, as he is a free agent during his recovery year from Tommy John surgery.
Wade Davis was given the keys to the ninth inning after performing very well in the setup capacity all year, and he delivered in a big way, converting every postseason save opportunity en route to a World Series title. Riding electric stuff and great command of the strike zone, Davis is in the first tier of closers.
It is worth noting that expecting a 1.00 ERA is paying for his ceiling, and his peripherals last year actually pegged him as more of a 2.50 ERA pitcher (2.29 FIP, 3.07 xFIP, 2.61 SIERA). His BABIP was an absurd .200 (it was .264 in 2014), and he also had the highest strand rate of his career at 92.2% (87.5% in 2014). He is one of the best, he’ll strike out more than a batter per inning, but I would advise caution if you’re looking at his surface stats for the past two years and thinking that’s exactly what you’re getting.
If you get 50 saves alongside 80 strikeouts, a 2.00 ERA, and 1.10 WHIP, no one’s going to feel bad for you.
