Yesterday's Studs and Duds: Fantasy Baseball Recap from 6/1/16

Every day, we will be taking a quick look at the best and worst fantasy baseball performers from yesterday's games. They were low-scoring affairs for the most part, with a couple of slugfests thrown in.

Here's a quick look at those who impressed on Wednesday, and those who want to pretend the day never happened.

Editor’s Note: To read about even more waiver wire options, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily. Prefer using your phone? Our free waiver wire app is available for download in the Apple Store.

Fantasy Baseball Studs

Mookie Betts (OF, BOS): Betts homered twice and also worked a pair of walks. He’s 9-for-17 with five homers, seven RBI, and nine runs scored in his last four games.

Chris Young (OF, BOS): Mookie wasn’t the only Red Sox outfielder to go deep multiple times last night. Young also homered twice and doubled, knocking in three runs.

David Ortiz (1B, BOS): Meanwhile, Ortiz hit his 15th homer. No player has ever hit 40 homers in his age-40 season. In fact, only five players have managed even half that mark. Papi has a shot.

Hyun Soo Kim (1B/OF, BAL): Kim went 3-for-5 with a walk and scored twice. It appears he’s finally out of the Orioles’ doghouse.

Jonathan Schoop (2B, BAL): Schoop was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.

Wilson Ramos (C, WAS): Ramos went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI as the Nationals completed a sweep of the Phillies. Ramos is hitting .338/.383/.536 after having the worst season of his career in 2015.

Max Scherzer (SP, WAS): Scherzer struck out 11 batters in eight innings of work. The only blemish on his line was a two-run homer. In other words, it was a typical Scherzer game.

Lorenzo Cain (OF, KCR): Cain collected three hits, scored twice, and drove in a run to help the Royals complete a 6-0 homestand. Kansas City has had 10+ hits in every game since losing Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon to injury. #CantPredictBall

Jacob deGrom (SP, NYM): deGrom pitched seven innings of one-run ball, striking out 10. He appears to be rounding into form after some moderate struggles early.

Zach Davies (SP, MIL): It’s doubtful that many fantasy owners benefited from it, but Davies was terrific against the Cardinals yesterday. He allowed only three singles in eight innings of work, striking out nine.

Nick Castellanos (3B, DET): Castellanos had his 18th multi-hit game of the season, collecting three singles. He had more hits than the entire Angels lineup…

Michael Fulmer (SP, DET): …Because Fulmer was dominant last night, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He ultimately allowed two hits in 7.2 shutout innings, striking out eight.

Edwin Encarnacion (1B, TOR): E5 went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI as the Jays completed a sweep of the Yankees.

Brandon Belt (1B, SFG): Belt was 3-for-4 with a walk and a two-run homer. He’s well on his way to a career year, hitting .299/.419/.503 with more walks (37) than strikeouts (35).

Jon Lester (SP, CHC): Lester allowed a leadoff homer, but only three other runners reached base on the evening. He went the distance for his sixth victory of the year, striking out 10.

George Springer (OF, HOU): Springer went 2-for-5 with a double and the game-winning homer. The Astros have won five straight to climb out of the AL West basement, and Springer’s performance is a big reason why. He’s got 12 hits, five of them for extra bases, during the streak.

Billy Hamilton (OF, CIN): Hamilton had three hits, knocking in two runs and stealing a pair of bags. It was his second three-hit game in three nights. In unrelated news, flurries were reported in Hell late last night.

Kyle Seager (3B, SEA): Seager had four hits and scored twice in a losing effort against the Padres. After a terrible start, his line is up to .287/.364/.520.

Wil Myers (OF, SDP): On the other side of that Mariners-Padres slugfest, Myers fell a triple shy of the cycle, scored twice, and drove in three runs…

Alexei Ramirez (SS, SDP): …But Ramirez was even better, hitting two homers and driving in five.

Fantasy Baseball Duds

Chris Archer (SP, TAM): Archer’s struggles continued as he allowed 10 baserunners (half of whom came around to score) in six innings. He’s now 3-7 on the year with a 4.75 ERA and 1.52 WHIP.

Adam Eaton (OF, CWS): Eaton was hitless in four at-bats, striking out twice. It’s never a good thing when a reliever has more hits than your leadoff guy, but the White Sox managed to win anyway…

Melky Cabrera (OF, CWS): …No thanks to Cabrera, who failed to reach base in six at-bats.

Michael Conforto (OF, NYM): Tough day for outfielders in Queens yesterday. Conforto also went 0-for-6, going down on strikes in four of those trips to the plate.

Curtis Granderson (OF, NYM): Also not a good day at Citi Field for leadoff hitters, as Grandy went hitless in five at-bats.

Jeremy Hazelbaker (OF, STL): Hazelbaker whiffed in all three of his at-bats. His hot start is a distant memory, as he’s posted an OPS under .500 since the end of April.

Eduardo Nunez (3B/SS, MIN): Nunez went 0-for-5 and stranded four runners in the process. That snapped a six-game hitting streak, which included five multi-hit efforts.

Justin Upton (OF, DET): Another 0-for-4 night for Upton, who’s hitting a pathetic .213/.259/.319 on the season.

Chase Headley (3B, NYY): Headley wore the Golden Sombrero, striking out all four times he went up to bat. His 2011 season remains perhaps the most inexplicable elite performances in recent memory.

Denard Span (OF, SFG): Span was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts and left three teammates on base.

Starling Marte (OF, PIT): Marte went hitless in four at-bats, striking out three times in a loss to the Marlins

Advertising

Giancarlo Stanton (OF, MIA): …Who won despite another rough game for their cleanup man. Stanton struck out twice in three at-bats and left four runners stranded. He’s whiffed 20 times in his last nine games.

Chris Herrmann (C, ARI): Herrman was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts for the second straight night.

Adam Duvall (OF, CIN): Duvall failed to reach base in five attempts, striking out twice and leaving five runners stranded.

Melvin Upton Jr. (OF, SDP): Upton was the only San Diego batter to go hitless last night, striking out three times in five at-bats. He did steal a base, at least.
