3 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Steven Matz (hip) left his start after facing just one batter (four pitches) on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates with an apparent hip injury. The Cardinals have been forced to turn to right-hander Angel Rondon, who was just called up from the minors before Sunday's game as a long-relief option out of the bullpen. Matz entered the game with a rough 6.03 ERA and 1.39 WHIP while walking eight and striking out 44 in 37 1/3 innings over eight starts, but a 4.25 FIP suggests his bloated ERA was a product of some bad luck early on. We'll have an update on the left-hander's injury when we know more. Prospect Matthew Liberatore, who made his MLB debut on Saturday, could be called back up to take Matz's rotation spot if his injury is serious enough to land him on the injured list.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
