3 years agoDenver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon III (hip, shoulder) will practice on Wednesday, according to head coach Vic Fangio. It's not what Javonte Williams' fantasy managers want to hear, as the Denver backfield could go back to an even timeshare between Gordon and the rookie this weekend against the Detroit Lions if Gordon is able to return in Week 14. Williams was extremely impressive in his first NFL start in the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, carrying a season-high 23 times for 102 yards and catching six of nine targets for 76 yards and a touchdown. If Gordon returns in a great matchup against the one-win Lions, both Gordon and Williams will have RB2 upside in a game in which the Broncos could stick to their run-first identity.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 years agoDenver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon III might be the most hated player in fantasy football, at least by managers that have Javonte Williams rostered. The two had exactly 203 carries as they split the backfield right down the middle in 2021, which was a big headache for fantasy managers. Heading into Week 1 on Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks, Williams is expected to be more of the lead back. However, there have also been reports that head coach Nathaniel Hackett wants to "ride the hot hand." The Seahawks run defense was leaky last year, with Williams likely getting the first crack to be the hot hand in games this year, Gordon will be on the RB3/4 borderline with far less upside than he had in 2021.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 years agoDenver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett hinted that he may ride the hot hand between running backs Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon III in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night. "I've always been a true believer in you want to roll with the hot hand. One guy gets going, you want to be sure to keep feeding that person. But I think they're going to be great complements to each other," Hackett said. Most reports this offseason suggested that the new coaching staff is ready to hand the keys to Williams, a second-year back that looked more explosive than Gordon last year despite a near-even timeshare. But with other reports suggesting it will be more of a committee, it's made Williams more of an RB2 than a true RB1 in 2022. Gordon will merely be a shaky RB3/flex against the Seahawks.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 years agoDenver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon III is reportedly looking at a split of backfield duties with teammate Javonte Williams to begin the 2022 season, per Benjamin Allbright. While Williams is expected to garner a higher percentage of carries, Gordon is set to be in line for goal line opportunities, which should help elevate his fantasy value, particularly in leagues where touchdowns are heavily prioritized. Gordon started all 16 games he appeared in for the Broncos last season, having collected over 900 rushing yards each of the past two years. With at least eight rushing scores on his ledger each season dating back to '16, Gordon boasts a solid floor, even if he isn't RB1 for Denver. Mike Boone can also be expected to factor into carries out of the Broncos' backfield.--Jesse Borek

3 years agoDenver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon III (foot) returned to Monday's training camp practice and was wearing pads. Gordon had been dealing with a minor foot injury that kept him out since last week, but it looks like he's good to go. It remains to be seen if he'll suit up for the team's second preseason game this Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. The 29-year-old veteran was in a near-even timeshare with Javonte Williams in 2021, and although the new Denver coaching staff is expected to divvy up the backfield playing time again in 2022, Gordon should be viewed as more of the 1B to Williams' 1A this time around. Still, Gordon is worth a late-round pick as a handcuff for Williams or as an RB3/flex in deeper leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
