Week 5 MLB Starting Pitcher Depth Charts for Fantasy Baseball
Someone cue up the South Park "Annnnnnnnnnnd it's gone!" meme, because right when we thought Greinke was back to feeling himself, he fell off the wagon again with a 6.2 IP, 7 ER performance on April 25th against the Cardinals. Greinke would bounce back with a 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 8 K performance against the Rockies, but it is still extremely hard to ignore just how heavily both he and teammate Shelby Miller have struggled since their move to Arizona. While Greinke has been walking the same low amount of batters, he is allowing far more HR and hits in general as his WHIP has jumped all the way up to 1.46. That is probably not what most Managers had in mind when they spent an early draft pick on him. Miller by comparison has been even more of a train wreck by allowing 7.3 BB/9, 10.4 H/9, and 2.3 HR/9. The struggles from the Arizona #1 and #2 have definitely been the most noteworthy story among starting rotations, but they are followed closely by Mat Latos's fantastic start. With a 1.84 ERA and 1.091 WHIP in his first four starts, Latos has looked in peak form for the pleasantly surprised White Sox.
Some additional aces such as Dallas Keuchel have had their individual struggles, but it is still simply too early into the season for anyone to say that Keuchel is no longer a fantasy ace or that they should dump him off in the trade market before it's too late. Some veterans such as R.A. Dickey and Ubaldo Jimenez are having serious struggles, and are fading away from SP relevance with every mediocre start and blowup performance. Some young guns like Aaron Nola, Blake Snell, and Vincent Velasquez are proving more and more that they are ready to make heavy contributions this season. There are tides shifting in every corner of MLB rotations, so take some time to review each team's SP situation and make sure you aren't unprepared when the true tier jumps start to happen in rapid fire succession.
