David Peterson May Have Larger Role This Season
5 years agoAs a result of starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard's (elbow) season-ending injury, New York Mets pitcher David Peterson may see a larger role with the team once the season begins. Peterson, the Mets top draft pick in 2017, was originally scheduled to begin the season at Triple-A. However, with Syndergaard's injury, Michael Wacha now moves into the starting rotation, leaving a hole at long relief and in the team's emergency starting pitching depth. In 2019, Peterson went 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 24 starts at Double-A. During spring training, Peterson impressed team officials by posting a 1.50 ERA and striking out six in six innings pitched. If Peterson begins the season with the Mets or is called up shortly after the season begins, he immediately gains value in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. Should one of the Mets other starting pitchers get injured, or if Wacha, Rick Porcello or Steven Matz falter at the back end of the Mets rotation, Peterson could find himself with a regular starting role on a contending team. Accordingly, Peterson should be on deep mixed and NL-only radars.
