6 years agoNew York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery, and the Yankees are optimistic that they will have him back in 2019. General manager Brian Cashman said that Gregorius should return between June and August of next year, in an interview with Michael Kay on ESPN New York. The leading internal candidate to start the year at shortstop in Gregorius' absence will be Gleyber Torres, who made 15 starts at short in his rookie season. Infielders Tyler Wade and Ronald Torreyes are other options. Free-agent shortstop Manny Machado is another possibility if they can land him on the open market. Gregorius had an excellent year, hitting .268/.335/.494 with 27 home runs, 86 RBI and 10 steals, so it's a big loss for New York for half the season.
