5 years agoSince returning to the majors on June 18, San Diego Padres catcher Francisco Mejia has raised his average from .167 to .218 and hammered four homers. Mejia finished Sunday’s contest 2-for-3 with a walk, including a game-deciding solo shot against the Chicago Cubs. While early-season struggles and injury prevented his ascent, Mejia is gradually supplanting Austin Hedges as the team’s primary backstop. Acquired in 2018 from the Cleveland Indians, the 23-year-old is considered a top hitting prospect. While Hedges may be amongst baseball’s best in defense, his 53 wRC+ is one of the league’s worst for catchers. After recording a 1.157 OPS in Triple-A this season, Mejia has nothing to prove in the lower levels and should continue gaining playing share if he keeps hitting. While Mejia still struggles with contact, his upside is clearly superior and is a deep-league rest-of-season option.--Andrew Le - RotoBaller
