4 years agoNew York Yankees third baseman Gio Urshela started at shortstop on Tuesday and went 2-for-2 with a walk against the Tigers. The Yankees flirted with the idea of having Urshela play some shortstop when shortstop Gleyber Torres and second baseman DJ LeMahieu were on the injured list last season, but the team ultimately never opted to move Urshela from third base last year. It's unlikely that Urshela gets much meaningful playing time at shortstop in 2021, but the 29-year-old is a capable fielder and expressed comfort and willingness to move around on defense if needed this season. Urshela's added versatility could open up playing time for third baseman Miguel Andujar (wrist) at some point, but that remains an unlikely possibility and this news shouldn't meaningfully boost the stock of either player.--Sam Chinitz
