Gleyber Torres Begins Rehab Stint
3 years agoNew York Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres (thumb) is beginning a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, and if all goes well he could be activated from the injured list when the team returns from its current road trip on Friday, according to MLB.com. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since August 8 with a left thumb strain. Bronx native Andrew Velazquez and utility man Tyler Wade have held down the shortstop position in Torres' absence, though one or both of them stand to lose significant playing time when the latter returns. Torres has disappointed this season, slashing just .253/.328/.353 with six homers, 42 RBI, 35 runs scored, and 12 stolen bases. Perhaps he can find the form he was displaying before the injury, as he was batting .393 to start the month of August.
