Joey Votto Suffers Broken Thumb, Will Miss Several Weeks
4 years agoCincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (thumb) will miss several weeks after breaking his thumb during Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. Votto was plunked on the thumb by a pitch and initially tried to stay in the game, leading to some speculation that he would be okay. He was eventually removed and replaced by Kyle Farmer at first base. According to manager David Bell, "It's going to be weeks for sure" when asked about how long Votto would be out. MLB.com's Mark Sheldon mused on Twitter that the team could move Nick Senzel from center field to either second or third base, Mike Moustakas to first base, and activate Shogo Akiyama to play center field to cover the loss of Votto, although that is just speculation at this point. Votto's loss will be felt as he was hitting .226 with five homers, nine runs, and 17 RBI in 106 at-bats.
