Matt Wieters Expected To Be In Platoon
7 years agoWashington Nationals catcher Matt Wieters is expected to be involved in more of a platoon situation behind the plate in 2018, with Pedro Severino the favorite to win the backup job. Severino must beat out Miguel Montero for the backup job in spring training, and Washington believes that Severino is ready to become a full-time big league player. The switch-hitting Wieters had a bad year his first season in D.C., batting only .225 with a .643 OPS in 422 at-bats while slugging 10 home runs and driving in 52. The fact that he won't play as much in 2018 will certainly hit his already dwindling fantasy stock. Wieters is more of a second backstop in two-catcher leagues with less projected playing time for the Nats.
