NBA Will Retire Bill Russell’s No. 6 Uniform Number
2 years agoThe NBA announced Thursday that it would be retiring the iconic No. 6 worn by Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell. Russell passed away on July 31 at the age of 88 and now becomes the first player in league history to have his number retired league-wide. Current players -- such as the Lakers' LeBron James and the Wizards' Kristaps Porzingis -- will be grandfathered in, which will allow them to continue wearing the number; the No. 6 will not be available for selection for future players. Russell was an 11-time NBA champion, who also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
