5 years agoNew York Mets starting pitcher Steven Matz is now in a spring competition with Michael Wacha for the fifth rotation spot. The belief is that the Mets may choose their fifth starter based on specific matchups, use an opener like Seth Lugo or Robert Gsellman and then turn to Matz and/or Wacha later in games, or just choose between Matz and Wacha based on their spring performances. Matz had a disappointing 2019 in which he went 11-10 with a 4.21 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP and 153 strikeouts in 160 1/3 innings pitched. Owners should proceed with caution when deciding to draft Matz in the coming weeks based on this news. If Matz wins a rotation spot outright, he is certainly worth a selection in deep mixed leagues and in NL-only formats. If, however, the Mets opt to use Matz in a different capacity or as a spot starter, his fantasy value takes a huge hit. A lot will depend on what both he and Wacha show us this spring, whether the other Mets starters remain healthy and what Mets management decides.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
