6 months agoRuggs is one of just nine wide receivers to have completed the 40-yard dash in 4.30 or less (4.27) since the event has been timed electronically. But he should not be categorized as “just a speedster” due to his reliable hands, versatility, and excellent route-running capabilities. These attributes enticed the Raiders to make Ruggs the first wide receiver to be selected during April’s NFL Draft. Those skills will also blend with his explosiveness to create exploitable mismatches against opposing defenders throughout his rookie season with Las Vegas. Ruggs will operate at the Z, while fellow newcomer Bryan Edwards will function at the X, and Hunter Renfrow will run routes in the slot. These responsibilities were solidified when Tyrell Williams encountered a torn labrum, which has removed the six-year veteran from the equation. Jon Gruden can concoct an assortment of plays that take advantage of Ruggs’ game-breaking speed in a downfield capacity, along with short and intermediate routes that could fuel huge gains. The high percentage routes can also counteract any reluctance from Derek Carr to launch deep throws that capitalize on Ruggs’ home run potential. He is a strong candidate to lead the Raiders in targets and receiving yards and could emerge as the highest point producer among first-year receivers.--Phil Clark - RotoBaller
