Week 19 Waiver Wire Pickups: Outfield

With just two months left in the season, the time for action has come. If you are a fringe competitor in your league, there's no time left for stashing, for investments in potential or hoping for things to get better. It's time to drop that slumping star and pick up some real performers on the waiver wire. If you are in a position of privilege in the standings, you're in luck.

This is the time for stashing for the fortunate few who have the luxury. Grab that injured star poised for September success. Snatch up that rookie with the recent promotion. Still, waiver wire scouting is no easy business. It is imperative to choose wisely at this point in the season. Every decision could be life or death come playoff time.

Week 19 Outfield Targets

Brad Miller, Tampa Bay Rays

Owned in 53% of Fleaflicker Leagues

I've resisted adding Brad Miller to this list for weeks and now it seems it may be too late. Over the first half of the season, Miller was nothing spectacular. Despite smacking 14 homers, his .241/.288/.459 line was enough to keep him dwelling on the waiver wire. Since the All-Star break, Miller has been one of the hottest hitters in the league, as shown by his much-improved .329/.398/.671 line with an additional six home runs.

Miller, who currently has eligibility at shortstop (his primary position) as well as the outfield, will be moving to first base to accommodate the newly acquired Matt Duffy. This shift could prove even more beneficial to his offensive production as first base is much less physically taxing than the hot corner. The young slugger is enjoying the best season of his career and has been steadily improving since his sophomore season in 2014 and could continue his surge for the rest of this season. His multi-positional eligibility is just an added perk.

Travis Jankowski, San Diego Padres

Owned in 18% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Last week this column made it abundantly clear that Alex Dickerson was the man to own in the Padres next-generation outfield of youngsters. However, Travis Jankowski has been making a case for himself over the past few weeks to be the premiere asset. Let's take a look at August. In the month's first week, the 25 year-old has gone 12-for-23 with a six-game hit streak, four multi-hit efforts and six stolen bases in as many days.

Jankowski doesn't offer much in the form of power. After all, he has just three career long balls in 119 career games. But the speed is very real. He's ranked fourth among MLB outfielders in stolen bases this year and his .373 OBP is best among the top-10 base stealers except for Starling Marte, who currently sits at .377 OBP. Ride out this hot streak for as long as it goes.

A.J. Pollock, Arizona Diamondbacks

Owned in 46% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Don't look now - A.J. Pollock is playing competitive baseball! He's not hitting off a tee, not throwing at 60 feet from an elevated surface. He's playing real baseball, which means it's not long now before one of the best players in the league returns to MLB action.

The Diamondbacks have made it clear that he will not be immediately returning to big league play. In fact, it will probably be a couple more weeks. Still, Pollock is a unique talent who must be scooped up immediately in all league formats. He made a legitimate MVP case in 2015 by posting a .315/.367/.498 line with 20 taters and 39 stolen bases. The injury is not the type that lingers, making Pollock poised for a strong September resurgence.

Jorge Soler, Chicago Cubs

Owned in 12% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Jorge Soler returned from the DL this weekend and submitted three strong games in Oakland. In the series, during which Soler played DH, the young gun went 4-for-12 with two dingers and five RBI. It's been a tough road for Soler, as he has been on a steady decline since his impressive rookie season.

As it stands now, his batting average has dropped exactly 30 points (.292 - .262 - .232) each season and the power has dipped as well. Still, everybody knows that the talent is there just waiting for Soler to figure it all out. Fortunately for Soler, Jason Heyward has been awful at the plate this year and Wilson Contreras still sees considerable time at catcher. If he continues to swing a hot bat, the Cubs will find a way to keep him in the lineup.

More Options: Yasmany Tomas (59%), David Dahl (55%), Shin-Soo Choo (42%), Denard Span (36%), David Peralta (37%), Andrew Benintendi (27%), Steven Souza Jr. (18%), Michael Conforto (17%), Leonys Martin (12%)
