RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - WGC Match Play

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for the fourth season.

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course that highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

One and Done Selections - WGC Match Play

Joe Nicely - Alex Noren

Alternate - Kevin Kisner

As the only non-stroke-play event on the PGA Tour schedule, the WGC-Dell Match Play is always an interesting and unique experience. Some people love it, some people hate it. I personally don’t have strong feeling either way, but sort of view it as a neat one-off change of pace.

Match play, in general, is unpredictable, and that’s certainly been the case throughout this event’s history. From an OAD perspective, this makes me reluctant to burn one of my big guns in an event that can be fairly called a crapshoot.

With that sentiment in mind, I’ll be firing up Alex Noren this week, a player that’s demonstrated both strong recent form and a knack for match play. The Euro Tour vet's track record in this event (T17-3rd-T5) and his overall career match play record (19-8), indicate his fondness for both this Austin CC layout and match play in general. While his opening group is undoubtedly a tough bunch, I like saving some OAD firepower here and gambling with the Swede in this unpredictable event

Corales Puntacana
Kramer Hickok (Jhonny Vegas - Alternate)

Spencer Aguiar - Tyrrell Hatton

Alternate - Brooks Koepka

I apologize for the late entry of this selection. If you want a full breakdown of why I am selecting Tyrrell Hatton, please give the Bettor Golf Podcast a listen. My RotoBaller teammates of Owen Vrabel and Matt Miller joined me on the show to go through the brackets, and I think there are a ton of nuggets we dropped from all different routes to consider

As far as my Corales Puntacana selection, I will be updating this article on Wednesday to make a pick.

Corales Puntacana
Joel Dahmen (Sahith Theegala - Alternate)

The amount of thought I have put into this selection is zero. I did not run a model of any kind and have no real reason behind the play. Frankly, I am frustrated it was included as a tournament to select from!

Yearly Earnings - $3,716,693
Yearly Cuts Made - 10/10

Matt Miller - Sergio Garcia

Alternate -

This week I'm rolling with El Nino! Sergio is a notoriously good match-play player with a total singles record of 41-32-4. In addition to being one of the greatest Ryder Cup players in history, Garcia has performed well in this event too, reaching the Quarter Finals in each of his last two appearances. Had Matt Kuchar not stiffed him out of gimme back in 2019, who knows how good that Quarter-Finals result could have been. Story of his life.

In addition to his match-play prowess, Sergio is trending upward. We saw him finish 26th at The Players, a result that could have easily been better, and inside the top 40 at the API and Genesis. I don't know how many miles the 42-year-old has left in the tank but I do believe he has at least one nice run left in him.

Owen Vrabel - Russell Henley

Alternate -

*** Pick changed from Zalatoris to Henley since Zalatoris was already used by Owen!

Joel Dahmen

Yearly Earnings - $4,343,764
Yearly Cuts Made - 8/10

Josh Bennett - Kevin Kisner

Alternate - Alex Noren

Full disclosure, I don’t know what to think with match play. Do records matter? Does form matter? What exactly matters in this format? Is it just random? I have no clue. I have heard Kisner say or allude to enjoying match play and that he thinks he has an edge there somehow, so I’m just going to trust that he’s right and run with him. Seems like he might be right, given his 67% win rate which is second in the field next to Alex Noren, as well as just overall good performance in this event in general. I also think he has a relatively easy pod to make it out of, and the side of his bracket is generally thought of to be weaker than the other side. I hope he proves the match play record haters (me) wrong and makes another run in this event!

Matthias Schwab (Joel Dahmen - Alternate)

Yearly Earnings - $875,290
Yearly Cuts Made - 7/10

Andrew Putters - Xander Schauffele

Alternate - Jon Rahm

This week has gone from laid back, to very stressful, now I’m just going to fire away, and have a blast watching. Xander might not be firing on all cylinders, but I do like his chances of getting out of the player pool and into match play. He has not had a ton of success in this format, but his road makes the most sense to me. Also, his numbers across the board have been trending upward but just needs to get over the hump. Look forward to an entertaining weekend of golf.
