One and Done Selections - RBC Canadian Open

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Tyrrell Hatton

Alternate - Tony Finau

While the RBC Canadian Open might look good on the surface, things aren’t very pretty once you move past the caked-on makeup and blonde highlights. When we get outside the top dozen or so golfers teeing it up this week at St. George’s Golf Club, we’re left with a fairly ragtag bunch that’s short on talent and high on volatility.

As we progress into the summer, things will start to get tight in this contest, as I’m already starting to feel the pinch of golfers I’ve already burned through, as the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, and Rory McIlroy are already off the board for me. In the absence of those options - and little to like otherwise - I’ll take a stab with Tyrrell Hatton, a player that I know is very good, but one I rarely seem to peg right. Equal parts whiny and hilarious, I can’t decide if I love or hate the Englishman, but I will be pulling for him this week on a classical, short layout that should suit the strengths of his game.

Yearly Earnings - $6,000,238
Yearly Cuts Made - 16/20

Josh Bennett - Matthew Fitzpatrick

Alternate - Corey Conners

The tournaments leading into the majors are always fascinating to me. The fields are usually weaker, a lot of storylines on who is here to prep for 2 days and go home, who is actually trying to win, plus all the chatter about course fit, recent history, etc. A lot of information to digest about a field of golfers the casual fan knows mostly nothing about. Anyways, my point being that there are a ton of unknowns, so I’m going to try to stick my flag somewhere that I feel brings less unknowns into the equation. What I do know about this golf course is that it is mostly wide open, fairways are big but the greens are small. I think this suits two kinds of golfers- the very long player off the tee and the elite short game players. I’m putting emphasis on the short game because I think the greens are so small, even the long hitters will occasionally have trouble hitting them. I want a guy that is solid off the tee and can get the ball in the hole once it’s on the green, whether that’s for birdie or par. Not many (if any) better than Fitzpatrick along those lines in this field, so that’s my guy this week.

Spencer Aguiar - Cameron Smith

Alternate - Harold Varner III

What a fortunate turn of events for me last week in this OAD contest. My original selection of Hideki Matsuyama was disqualified from the tournament because of markings on his club, but since he didn't get himself out of round one, my alternate in Joaquin Niemann came into play to lock in a third-place showing at the Memorial.

To be honest, I probably have the most shallow player pool left of the group, which technically should signify me taking a more cautious approach for an event like the Canadian Open, but I am going to swing for the fence on Cameron Smith and hope to steal a victory from the Aussie that might be enough to propel me to hold on for dear life down the stretch.

Smith's ball-striking implosion at the Memorial is something that I wouldn't look too heavily into since Muirfield is a course that has caused him issues in the past, and his first-place grade on my model will be enough for me to hope for the best.

Yearly Earnings - $6,945,031
Yearly Cuts Made - 18/20

Matt Miller - Chris Kirk

Alternate -

Will Zalatoris got me back on track last week with a top-five finish at the Memorial. Still, it's getting later and later into the season and I need to make a move to gain some ground. With the top of the board likely using this event as a tune-up for next week's US Open, it feels like a good week to move down the board and take a shot.

I will be going with Chris Kirk this week in Canada. The 37-year-old has certainly gone through his ups and downs but appears to have found something in his game as of late. Kirk hasn't lost strokes off the tee since last October and for the most part his irons have kept up. He lost 5.1 strokes on approach last week at the Memorial, but that was the first time since January at the American Express that he lost strokes in that category. Even with the unusually bad iron week, Kirk grinded it out to make the cut.

The short game for Kirk is a bit inconsistent but he has now gained strokes around the green in four consecutive events, including Southern Hills and Muirfield Village. If the putting can be just baseline this week, I don't see a reason why he can't contend on the weekend.

Yearly Earnings - $4,969,914
Yearly Cuts Made - 14/20

Andrew Putters - Harold Varner III

Alternate - Matthew Fitzpatrick

This week is not so simple. First, you are dodging withdrawals left and right. Secondly, you have probably used most of the elite players already. . A couple of keys I am drawing from are results on courses with small greens, par 5 scoring 500-550 and par 3 scoring over 200. HV3 and Matthew Fitzpatrick are really good in this realm. They are both on the edge of winning a tournament. I believe you cannot go wrong with either player.

Yearly Earnings - $3,531,426
Yearly Cuts Made - 12/20

Owen Vrabel - Tyrrell Hatton

Yearly Earnings - $7,319,360
Yearly Cuts Made - 17/20
